Word Problems

Word problems can be tricky for kids because it incorporates a story with a math problem. Students need to figure out first what is happening in the story, how to set up an equation, then solve the equation. There is many steps to word problems, therefore a lot of room for error to occur.

I was helping a second grade boy I babysit with his math homework the other day and he was learning a great way to break down word problems but writing down the total and then both parts that the student needs, and using a question mark for the parts that the students do not know. I took a picture of both and have attached them both. The math curriculum that they use at the school the boy goes to is Everyday Mathematics.

  1. Hi Freddie! I really liked this post, because I used to struggle with word problems myself and my current students in after-school are always asking me to help with word problems! I really like how that worksheet broke the problem down into different steps, and made it more clear on how to start the problem. Sometimes, starting the problem can be the hardest part! Thanks for sharing!
