Intro to Ratios

I was helping a boy I babysit with his homework tonight and he was learning about ratios, and I remembered back to when I was learning math, and this was always something that confused me. Ratio is a comparison of two quantities. There are three types of ratios, part-to-part, part-to-total,and rates. All these types are seen and used throughout everyday life in cooking, money, or simply breaking up quantities. Ratios can be written three different ways, as seen below.

πŸ”ΊπŸ”ΊπŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™

When looking at the ratio of triangles to hearts

1. With the word "to"
               2 to 3
2. With a semicolon
               2:3
3. As a fraction
               2/3
When writing ratios you need to be careful to read what is being compared to what and then always simplify when you can! Here is a great intro video from Khan Academy

Here is a great worksheet  I found to help students get comfortable to using ratios to describe two quantities!

  1. Freddie,
I really like this post. My class has been doing a lot of worksheets with shapes lately, but they are too easy for one of my students. This sheet would allow for her to stay on topic, while challenging her by going into a more complex mathematical concept. I can pull her to a separate desk and work with her in explaining them. I think she will be successful as she did really well a few months back when we worked on fractions. Thanks for this great resource.
