Counting with Coins

Kids start learning about coins as early as pre-kindergarten. In my class we are teaching the students about which coins are which and how much they are worth. Learning about coins for kids can be very confusing! Why are some of them bigger than others and it does not mean that it is worth more? Why are they different colors? Why are they worth such arbitrary numbers such as 1 and 25? When teaching about coins, there are a lot of different math concepts involved such as number sense, counting and, counting by 5's and 10's and 25's. Because there are so many different concepts and levels of understanding it does make it easier to differentiate for students. Number Recognition

I am taking a large step back, away from computing numbers and want to talk about the most basic form of math, that I can think of-- Counting and Number Recognition. I wanted to focus on this because it is the first thing that students learn about math in school and the core to their understanding. I am teaching in a pre-kindergarten classroom right now, and learning how to count, recognize numbers, and write numbers are our math goals for the end of the year. I wanted to post some great worksheets, games and videos that we use in our classroom because they are a super fun way to practice! Intro to Ratios

I was helping a boy I babysit with his homework tonight and he was learning about ratios, and I remembered back to when I was learning math, and this was always something that confused me. Ratio is a comparison of two quantities. There are three types of ratios, part-to-part, part-to-total,and rates. All these types are seen and used throughout everyday life in cooking, money, or simply breaking up quantities.
