Subtraction With Regrouping
I was doing a math problem the other day when I had to subtract 63-38; I started with the ones place and for a second I got so confused.. how am I going to subtract 8 from 3 when 8 is the bigger number?! Then I remembered that with a little trick called regrouping, I would be well on my way to get the answer. Regrouping is the process of making groups of 10s to aid you in adding and subtracting. I found this great video from Khan Academy that explains grouping very well, which I have attached below. But to sum it up. When looking at 63-38 we must borrow a tens from the 6 and carry it over to the ones making it 5 and 13. 13 minus 8= 5 and then 5-3 is 2 so the answer is going to be 25!

ReplyDeleteWhen I was in elementary school I was always SO confident in my ability to regroup when subtracting. Unfortunately, I was a little too confident and would rush through my work or test and get the answer wrong. I would forget about the regrouping rule and try and subtract kind of how I would add and just switch around the numbers.
I think practice worksheets and videos are the perfect way to become more confident in subtracting and regrouping! This topic can be extremely challenging to a young student, OR you could have an over confident student like I was and totally forget the regrouping rule while subtracting.

ReplyDeleteI remember seeing this quite often when I worked in an afterschool program. When going over my children's homework there would be mistakes in there work because they would forget to regroup. I would have to go over it with them step by step so they can remember what they did in there classrooms and so they can get the correct answer.
I think videos are a very good way to grasp material quickly. Thank you!
